Site Stewardship Outreach Services

Sustainability Problem and Proposed Solution: 

Soil erosion and compaction from ad-hoc/’shortcut’ trails wash off soil during rain events and pollute our waterways by entering storm drains. We also face pressure from invasive species encroaching on our native landscape.
We hope to combat this ecological degradation by conducting outreach to increase the awareness of their actions as well as offer opportunities to intern or volunteer with Site Stewardship

Project Description: 

2015-2016
We hope to draw more attention from the students of UCSC towards campus restoration efforts and local natural history. We will be doing this through outreach via tabling, social media activity, and an interactive sign in OPERS

-Maintain steady activity on the FaceBook page and track 'likes' and 'share' of our topics and events(ongoing)
-Begin design process of interactive sign about local natural history and ecological issues(12/16)
-Begin a short video series that would highlight Ecological Issues faced on campus during different season. Take short videos of workdays so that interested individuals can see what the internship is like (ongoing)

2014-2015
*Facebook Page: By the end of Spring Quarter, 2015, the SSP Facebook page: Will have 200 likes and more students will get involved in the program.
This facebook page will provide a way for students to informally contact us, get updates on volunteer days and get fun facts about campus lands and other environmental issues that they can share with others.
*Tabling: Table at events to promote the program. Tabling is our way to personally inform people about what SSP does and provide them with a signup sheet for volunteer days.
*Interpretive Sign: Create abstract, create signs, get approvals & install them
It is intended to educate students, staff, and visitors on campus about the impact of human interaction with the campus lands. We believe that our community will acknowledge, respect and contribute to the importance and history of these restoration sites and other areas on campus which have been damaged when compared to their original status.
Importance of Outreach: By spreading awareness through social media, tabling and establishing interpretive signs, we connected people from diverse backgrounds and motivated them to contribute and understand the importance of their participation in the improvement of landscapes.
Steps
*Facebook Page:
Created a Facebook Page, a common administrator account and invited friends to like the page (August, 2015)
Selected and uploaded new material to the facebook page (September, 2015)
*Tabling:
Tabled at 2 different events Spring Spotlight and Earth Day (April, 2015)
*Interpretive Sign:
Created an abstract (December, 2015)
Created the design (January, 2015)
Corrected the design (February, 2015)
Cardboard version of the sign (February, 2015)
Wrote a cover letter (February, 2015)
Revised cover letter (March, 2015)
Contacted Dean Fitch (April, 2015)
Got the necessary approvals (April, 2015)
Researched for background information for the panels (May, 2015)
Still working on the last steps to finish the design of the panels and submission of work orders in process (June, 2015)

Metrics for Success: 

2015-2016
*Facebook page: The amount of likes the page gets and the amount of people that actually use it to contact us or get involved.
*Interactive sign: There will be an interactive sign in Cowell Meadow that has information of ecological issues
*5-8 short (2-5 minute) video of ecological issues on campus and what individuals can do to mitigate damage either through behavioral change or joining us on a volunteer day or internship

2014-2015
*Facebook page: Partially accomplished. The page was created in August and barely updated. It was limited to 102 out of the 200 desired likes in our yearly goal stated at the beginning of fall quarter because it wasn’t the priority in the project.
*Tabling: Accomplished. Tabling took place at Spring Spotlight and Earth Day. Around 10 more people signed up to participate in future volunteer days.
*Interpretive sign: In process. Up to this point Dave Roe is working on the submission of work orders and I’m finishing my research for the creation of the panels. This project is about to get done in a week.
