Project Description: 

Our project goal is to install water bottle filling stations to enable use of more sustainable, reusable water bottles in lieu of single use plastic water bottles. Our first step will be to identify high traffic locations at residence halls which would be conducive to installing bottle fillers. The next step would be to contract with a vendor to install the bottle fillers in a manner compliant with all UC policies. We anticipate that bottle fillers will be installed by the end of September 2018.

Metrics for Success: 

Surveying machines and calculating number of plastic water bottles eliminated from production.

As of May 2018, we have eliminated waste from roughly 1050 disposable plastic water bottles at each installed bottle filler. This represents a total estimated eliminated waste of 100,000 disposable plastic water bottles for all Rachel Carson residence halls over the course of a year.

Next Steps: 
The funding for this year has been utilized to install bottle fillers at Rachel Carson Residence Halls. We will continue to identify possible locations for installation next summer, 2019.

As of May 2018, we have installed water bottle filing stations in Rachel Carson L and G Residence Halls.
