Climate and Energy Strategy (CES)

Sustainability Problem and Proposed Solution: 

Climate disruption threatens human civilization and integral systems of the Earth's biosphere. As part of the UC's commitment to addressing climate change, UCSC will achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2025, providing a case study in transitioning a large and complex institution to carbon neutrality. The Climate and Energy Strategy will inform decisionmakers, facilities managers and other stakeholders with analysis of cost-effective strategies to achieve carbon neutrality.

How to Join: 
Engage in the Climate Action Planning process, slated for Spring 2016!

Project Description: 

In cooperation with UCSC staff (including the Climate Action Manager and Energy Manager), a consultant team headed by Integral Group will

-Aid UCSC in developing a strategy to cost-effectively address Cap & Trade regulations
-Generate a Strategic Energy Plan, including identification of PG&E Partnership-qualifying projects through 2020 and additional Carbon Reduction Measures to achieve carbon neutrality by 2025
-Recommend financing options that consider UCSC's available funding mechanisms and economic constraints
-Evaluate, recommend and facilitate the advancement of renewable energy opportunities
-Develop an excel-based strategic decision making tool that allows for modification of relevant inputs (eg price of electricity, cost of offsets) as conditions evolve
-Integrate faculty and students into processes, as appropriate to support experiential learning

Work will be concluded in Winter, 2016 and the Climate and Energy Strategy, as well as updated Strategic Energy Plan, will be presented to stakeholders by April, 2016.

Metrics for Success: 

Short-term success will be evaluated with completion of the Strategy and Plan, while long-term success will be judged on impactful implementation given the scope of the plan and process.

Results: 

The Climate and Energy Strategy will provide a techno-economic scenario analysis tool, an updated Strategic Energy Plan, and a multi-dimensional roadmap to achieve carbon neutrality at UCSC. After the conclusion of the CES, the Sustainability Office will engage stakeholders to update the Climate Action Plan by the end of Academic Year 2015-16.
