Evaluating LEED Design Operating Performance

Sustainability Problem and Proposed Solution: 

LEED and Green designed buildings are considered to be optimal energy performance structures. However, after they are built there is no method used to keep track of performance based on the design of the building. We plan to devise a real-time energy feedback visualization that shows the energy usage of the building and the optimal energy usage of the building.

Project Description: 

The overarching goals are to determine whether or not there is a gap between the buildings current performance and its optimal performance, analyze the magnitude of such a gap in relation to specific design goals and building management practices, and display the buildings energy usage with real-time data. It is projected that this will directly affect the occupants management and behavior which will then positively affect the overall energy usage.

We will measure success based on the impact our deliverables have on the MBNMS building.

We have an initial outcome and a secondary outcome for this project. The primary outcome is to specify and implement a system for assuring enhanced energy performance. The secondary outcome is to provide awareness to the public about the project, and display comprehensive system information in an interactive and friendly manner. In addition, we anticipate a byproduct of the projects results to influence other green designs to implement a similar system set up by our project.
