PICA Events Coordination is a project to connect the Program in Community and Agroecology (PICA) with the UCSC campus community, and provide opportunities for students to connect to their food systems and each other. contributing to a wider sustainability movement. Events that PICA coordinates include workshops, collaborative potlucks, events like the Village Housing Food Justice Fair, and other campus-wide sustainability events. Campus wide events include the annual Earth Summit, Earth Week, and the Sustainability Spring Fest. Learning and collaborative opportunities help empower communities to live sustainable lives and consider global sustainability issues. This project shares and reflects the mission of the Program in Community and Agroecology (PICA) for food systems learning, the Campus Sustainability Plan, and the Blueprint for a Sustainable Campus. It combines goals, objectives, and blueprint topics like food, social and environmental justice, and academics and curriculum. Goals for this project include reaching at least 100 students, hosting 2 quarterly PICA workshops through the academic year 2013-2014, collaborating on campus sustainability events, and contributing to PICA’s program and leadership team. Events provide a space for people to collaborate, share skills and knowledge, and engage in community building. The Program in Community and Agroecology and other sustainability organizations are a part of a growing network of environmental and social organizing for just, sustainable practices and food systems. Workshops invite knowledge from guest facilitators, offering a wide range of knowledge. PICA collaborates with numerous groups like campus gardens, organizations, and groups. We build a sustainability movement by acknowledging environmental and social injustices, educating, training, workshopping, discussing, and engaging in sustainable approaches for action. Event coordination requires communication with facilitators, outreach, time management, budget managment, and other leadership skills.
