Rachel Carson College Vermicomposting Project

Sustainability Problem and Proposed Solution: 

Compostable food waste dumped in landfills is a major contributor to methane and C02 emissions, which in turn, contributes to Global Warming, which in turn, impacts the most vulnerable human populations (i.e. poor) with increasingly severe “natural disasters”. To enact small but meaningful ways to mitigate this is to support social justice locally as well as globally.

Project Description: 

By composting food scraps via a worm bin, the Rachel Carson College staff would be able to dispose of its food waste directly and efficiently, thereby achieving multiple goals related to the campus’ Zero Waste Initiative in general, and the mission of the Carbon Fund in particular: 1) reducing carbon emissions; 2) decentralizing the waste stream; and 3) making staff and faculty active participants in supporting best workplace practices as they relate to sustainability.

Metrics for Success: 

We will accomplish our resource savings by weighing the food waste each time we take it out to the bin.
