Sustainability Lab (S-lab)

Sustainability Problem and Proposed Solution: 

Students need improved access to facilities, mentorship, training and resources in order to successfully complete research projects. Often, projects get started but are not completed due to lack of adequate resources or graduation. This project provides facilities, training, mentorship and resources needed for students to successfully complete sustainability research projects, and provides students with a community that enables the best sustainability projects to continue.

The S-lab website will be launched June, 2016
The S-lab facilities will be purchased and operational by September, 2016
The S-lab training modules will be completed by September, 2016
The S-lab facilities will be fully opened to student membership in October, 2016
The S-lab site plan for future expansion will be completed in June, 2017

Results: 

The project will develop a living laboratory at UCSC that support students sustainability project. A S-lab web site will serve as the information portal. The S-lab will offer on-line information and hands-on workshops to provide students training in areas like water management systems, electrical micro grids, 3D design and fabrication, energy materials and device fabrication and testing, and remote sensing systems. Students who pass basic training will have access to S-lab facilities in Thimann (3rd floor) and the Arboretum. The S-lab will have a faculty, staff and a community mentorship network to assist students on the research projects. S-lab affiliated projects will be detailed on our website and project clearing house. S-lab workshops and projects will be open to the local community for collaborative projects with students. The S-lab will service the sustainability minor and other sustainability course at UCSC.
