I am always open to collaborate with anyone who has the same kinds of goals with me, or if we could work together to spread our goals to other students around campus!
I can be contacted through email (firstname.lastname@example.org) and have office hours set up on Tuesdays and Thursdays where anyone is free to come in and ask me question about the work I am doing or suggest any new projects they would like to see.
I have teamed up with students from East Waste Zone, the Zero Waste Team, and other interns that work with light retro fits.
My internship required me to find new ways to reduce waste at Colleges 9 &10. This is important because the campus is on a goal to achieve Zero Waste by 2020 and resident halls are important targets for waste reduction.
First I developed a survey that was specified for residents of both resident halls and apartments to determine how interested students would be in participating in certain waste reduction projects and to get a sense of much they already knew about recycling/waste. While making the survey I tried to build a relationship with the RA's by going to their meetings and introducing myself and talking about kinds of projects I wanted to work on throughout the school year. This was useful since I was able to get feedback and support from them when it came to promoting projects, such as the survey.
I have also conducted a waste assessment at both colleges to get a base line of the trash leaving at the moment. This is an important part of my project since the waste assessment is the way I will keep track of the progress that has been made throughout the year. I plan on making a large poster with the data collected from the first and alst waste assessment. Also, I will leave a guide on how to do a waste assessment so that the next person to take my place can conduct one and collect the data to compare it to mine.
My main goal is to attempt to reduce the amount of waste by creating interactive ways to reach out to students. I want to find other ways to outreach besides putting posters/flyers filled with information. For example, I recently teamed up with another intern to promote Earth Week where we encouraged students to take part in activites where they would get in touch with nature, reduce their waste, and reuse the material they already had.
