Sustainability Problem and Proposed Solution: 

With exponential rates of population growth and increasing rates consumption, waste management is quickly becoming a global priority. But how do we move beyond just managing our waste? How do we make our consumption practices less wasteful and more sustainable? In an effort to reduce reuse, recycle and reach UCSC's goal of Zero Waste by 2020, the Zero Waste Team developed, implements and manages innovative projects to minimize wasteful consumption and divert waste from our local landfill.

Metrics for Success: 

Each of our projects will be collecting data on waste diversion, waste produced, campus participants, and any other relevant measurements of success. This data will be presented upon completion of project objectives.

  • Promote and manage 10 major Zero Waste Events to continue fostering a culture of Zero Waste on campus
  • Streamline compostable materials used in all campus cafes to aid in efforts to standardize our waste collection systems
  • Host two campus-wide Campus Clean Up Days to educate campus users on proper waste disposal practices, shed light on littering issues, and keep our campus clean
