Project Description: 

The DROPS project incorporates adaptive and low impact development (LID) strategies to reduce onsite flooding, filter pollutants, and capture surface runoff. DROPS also includes educational plans to engage students at Bay View Elementary and the Santa Cruz community at large. Building on prior work, the 2017-2018 IDEASS team is developing lesson plans, outreach activities and a documentary film to introduce practical options that can change our collective approach to sustainable water management. The project will feature LID construction at Bay View Elementary as a demonstration of how schools can adopt conservation strategies while exposing the vulnerability of local water resources and impacts on climate action goals.

Metrics for Success: 

The City of Santa Cruz implements more enforcement on rain harvesting tanks for the community and the students at Bay View Elementry motivate others to learn more about water sustainability.

Next Steps: 
Next school year, DROPS will be focused on plant propagation after summer construction.
