Zero Waste Map

Sustainability Problem and Proposed Solution: 

The UC systems' pledge to achieve zero waste (95% Diversion Rate) by 2020 is quickly approaching and UCSC still has a long ways to go to reach it. In order to address the lack of a campus-wide zero waste map with detailed locations of recycling receptacles, UCSC's Ground Services PSI intern is creating a zero waste map to increase awareness of on-campus recycling stations, which can potentially increase UCSC's diversion rate.

Project Description: 

The purpose of this project is to create a zero waste map that gives detailed locations of on-campus refuse, container recycling, compost, and paper receptacles. Once completed, the map will be available for UCSC affiliates and the general public on the website, maps.ucsc.edu, and can be viewed on any electronic device with internet capabilities. There will also be thorough documentation on how to update the map for future students who are interested in taking over this project.

Metrics for Success: 

Qualitative Metrics for Success:
Successful implementation of the Humanities pilot program
Thorough documentation of all procedures and processes taken to develop map
A universally legible zero waste map that is available online to the public.

Quantitative Metrics for Success:
Contact ITS to determine website traffic before and after launch of completed Zero Waste Map
Provide link to Zero Waste Map to all 10 Colleges, academic departments, and other on-campus entities and ask for number of people reached from each area/ # of campus departments reach out to
Breakdown of number students/UCSC affiliates reached out to via contacts mentioned above
If possible, compare the change in diversion rates between the month before and after the launch of completed zero waste map

The tangible result that this project will deliver is an online zero waste map. The intangible results would be educating students on the various locations they can properly dispose of their unwanted materials and increase UCSC's diversion rate.

·The successful implementation of the Humanities Pilot Program provided important information on how to develop a proper mapping procedure.

·There will be a two guides on how to edit the Zero Waste Map in Drupal and in JOSM that will be added as attachments by 6/30.

·The final Zero Waste Map has been completed and can be viewed by the public.

·The website traffic before the launch of the Zero Waste Map was . The website traffic after the launch of the Zero Waste Map was . There was an increase/decrease of %. Percentages will be updated once information is available. Estimated time of completion 6/16

·As of now, the link of the zero waste map has been shared with the Ground Services Department. More departments will be contacted once feedback on the map has been received and addressed.
