Arboretum Lighting Project

Sustainability Problem and Proposed Solution: 

The Arboretum is not lit, making it inaccessible for pedestrians, cyclists and public transportation users. By lighting pathways, roadways ad bus stops, we can ensure safety and accessibility for many more visitors. This is tackling the broader issue of Social justice, by affording people who aren’t able to (or choose not to) use vehicular transportation, and the lights will be 100% solar powered, ensuring a zero carbon footprint for the life of the project.

Project Description: 

The Arboretum is dark. There is only lighting near the Horticulture II building where events are held, and one motion sensor light down the road towards the exit. This project will install more solar powered lights illuminating walkways, driveways, signage, the Empire Grade bus stop and parking areas, providing more safety for visitors and staff/volunteers.

Metrics for Success: 

We can measure the number of visitors coming from campus, on public transit or on bicycle. A simple survey at the visitor’s center at the time of ticket purchase/sign in can facilitate this. Questions such as “How did you travel here today”, “Have you visited the Arboretum before” will be asked.

Results: 

Positive results will show an increase in visitation by pedestrians and cyclists, and neutral or negative results will show no increase in visitation.
