As UCSC's ultimate goal of zero waste by 2020 nears, Crown College started to get the ball rolling. The main foci to attack waste at Crown was to reduce/ban paper towels in the residential bathrooms, to implement and alleviate composting to residents and passing students/faculty by the dining hall, and, lastly, to provide educational material about easy ways to become more sustainable. My project was shaped and preceded mainly from collaborating with East Waste Reduction, the Crown and Merrill college residential advisors, and other Campus Sustainability interns.

I also acted as a resource to the residential advisors to speak to and help them generate sustainable ideas/projects of their own. I “greened” events, such as Crown’s Social Fiction Conference, by directing and labeling trash flow to their correct bins – composting, recycling, and trash – and by encouraging the audience to compost. Working on a very personal level, I listened to the voices, first hand, of the Crown residents, residential advisors, faculty, senate, and more to choose what areas to work on. In result, I only envision progress/success to our sustainable goal, zero waste by 2020. I see a permanent compost bin in front of Banana Joe's and the Cr/Mr dining hall, Crown garden landscaping days becoming tradition every year, each house coming up with their own sustainable commitment each year, and easy sustainable habits becoming the norm.
