Greenhouse gases have long-term harmful effects and reducing the energy required, however small, means we are producing less of these harmful gases. Which in the scheme of things has the potential, to on the smallest scale, reduce the harm we continue to exert on our own surroundings. Also, we eliminate, for this small area on campus, the possibility of mercury leaching into the ground or water supply causing harm to the environment.
