Energy efficient oil free vacuum pumps for the UCSC Stable Isotope Laboratory

Sustainability Problem and Proposed Solution: 

Laboratories account for about half the energy usage at UCSC. In some analytical facilities like the Stable Isotope Laboratory, vacuum pumps are a significant energy users because they are always on. Replacing old energy intensive oil rotary pumps with clean efficient oil free diaphragm pumps will save significant amounts of energy and keep sensitive analytical equipment operating contamination free for a longer time.

Project Description: 

I will replace oil rotary pumps with oil free diaphragm pumps and monitor the energy savings and performance. I will promote this project in signage in the Stable Isotope Laboratory and on the lab website.

Metrics for Success: 

Significant energy savings. Recognition of the viability of this upgrade in the community.

I will monitor the energy savings via load on the uninterruptible power supply unit associated with each system and report this savings in kWh. I will report my experience on the lab website.
