Sustainability Problem and Proposed Solution: 

Laboratories account for about half the energy usage at UCSC. In some analytical facilities like the Stable Isotope Laboratory, vacuum pumps are a significant energy users because they are always on. Replacing old energy intensive oil rotary pumps with clean efficient oil free diaphragm pumps will save significant amounts of energy and keep sensitive analytical equipment operating contamination free for a longer time.
