Sustainability Problem and Proposed Solution: 

This project is looking to address the carbon neutrality goal set by UC President Janet Napolitano for 2025. Carbon accountability will work to influence change on campus while providing funding for energy efficiency improvements and new clean energy projects.

Project Description: 

The University of California President, Janet Napolitano, recently set a carbon neutrality goal for 2025. This would mean that all carbon emissions would either be reduced or offset at each university within the next ten years. UC Santa Cruz is working with the Environmental Defense Fund Climate Corps program to research the feasibility of carbon accounting as a vehicle for behavior change and clean energy project funding. Carbon accounting would include all carbon equivalent emissions within university operations and putting a price on these emissions that would embody the external costs within university operations. The EDF fellow will be working in conjunction with students at UCSC, UC Berkeley and UC Santa Barbara. The research will continue through July 31st.
