Solar Energy Allocation System- Engineers Without Borders UCSC Chapter

Sustainability Problem and Proposed Solution: 

By developing efficient solar power systems, Engineers Without Borders will be using sustainable, renewable energy opposed to fossil based energy. While changing the energy source of the arboretum greenhouse, we are developing a better understanding of how students will work with electricity and renewable systems in the future.

Project Description: 

EWB will upgrade the West Greenhouse in UCSC’s arboretum to provide efficient and accessible solar power to its users. The goal is not only to develop a better system but for the EWB team to provide themselves with the necessary functional, hard skills of designing, planning, and building a stand-alone solar energy grid. In the second phase of this project, EWB-UCSC will apply their new knowledge to design and construct individualized solar home packages for local and international deployment.

Metrics for Success: 

Testing and vetting of the system by industry professionals and those who have previously designed systems of this nature.
