Sustainability Problem and Proposed Solution:

Students often think they need to drive alone to get home for the holidays to LA. Students don't know the various options available to use sustainable transportation. By becoming informed about the options, hopefully, more students will chose an alternative to driving alone and save greenhouse gas emissions. By using a video format, we hope to have a more accessible fun way to reach students and inspire them to make a change.

Project Description:

TAPS will be working with OEI Instructional Designer, Aaron Zachmeier, to define and meet the learning objectives for the project, and OEI Videographer, Vernon Legakis, who will be in charge of production and post-production of the video material. Project timeline will be jointly coordinated between TAPS and OEI Course Producer, Julia Veble Mikic, according to the agreed project plan and budget. Student employees will be involved at all stages of the project.

The combination of effective messaging and video development experience can allow TAPS/OEI to partner and start a new method of sustainable transportation messaging to our campus population. The Holiday Travel video will inform students of all the ways they can get home to Los Angeles and will help promote affordable and sustainable modes of travel. Since the campus requires that first and second year students living on campus do so without a personal vehicle, it is essential to connect them with sustainable travel choice for weekend and holiday trips. We hope to provide an interesting, exciting video that provides information about alternatives to diving alone to LA. Students will see this video and become educated about the options so they can chose an alternative to driving alone and share that information with others. We will develop the video with the help of professional staff on campus who hire students to help create the material thus making it as relevant and exciting as possible. Once the video is completed, we will post it on our various social media outlets, on line, and through the new on-line student orientation.
Video messaging allows 24/7 access to key transportation information for our diverse campus population and promotes a variety of modes of travel so individuals can make the best choice for their given needs. This information is needed so ALL have access to the variety of modes of travel UCSC and its partners offer. The project will be completed by the end November 2019 or sooner.

Metrics for Success:

We cannot directly measure the resource savings from this project as the actual emissions reductions will come from the actual behavior switch of individuals to sustainable modes of travel. We can track the number of people who have viewed the videos to see its impact and we can add questions to our regular surveys to see if the videos have impacted their choices or better informed them of options.

This video was quickly posted on the TAPS Website and You Tube on November 6th, 2019, right before the Holiday travel period. It was promoted through social media, Holiday Travel tabling, and our TAPS website page. It had 65 views right away.

In the future, this video will be attached to the TAPS online Orientation module where all incoming students (Frosh and Transfer) and parents will have access to its content. We will also include it in all outgoing print materials and emails that go to residential students in late October.

This year, it was unclear if the video would be ready and was not promoted to its fullest extent. Next year, we expect to give this to the RA group and use it for Floor meetings to describe travel options. We will place it on our vertical banner used during tabling events and will promote it at the annual Cornicopia event.

We came in on budget ($2182.50). This project hit many bumps in the road, but we were pleased to see it in the first Holiday season after project award. Who knew OPERS would remove the Holiday Charter service that was popular for years and was to be our central feature of the video?

We shared this video with other UC and Cal State campuses who were enthusiastic about developing their own unique version. We look forward to having this as a standard tool for enthusiastically informing students and parents about choices for traveling home to Southern California and expect it to be commonly referred to as the most useful information resource.
