West Research Park (WRP) Bike Room Upgrade

Sustainability Problem and Proposed Solution: 

The adoption of effective space-saving and security access control solutions will increase the number of indoor bike park stations where bikes can be comfortably and safely stored. In the effort to increase the "bike/e-bike users community", the WRP Bike Room renovation will encourage staff, faculties, and students to become bike commuters with a consequent reduction of greenhouse gas emissions (as calculated below), in compliance with the UCSC bicycle programs.

Project Description: 

The adoption of effective space-saving and security access control solutions will increase the number of indoor bike park stations where bikes can be comfortably and safely stored. Improving the bike room will be an additional service provided to the bike users at WRP that already have access to #2 showers and lockers made in the past years. The overall scope of the project includes the physical room maintenance (painting, flooring, and ceiling improvements), electronic door lock, bike racks, bike repair station, and bike pump station installation. Through the use of the best combination of racks (the project includes both vertically as well as floor-mounted racks), it will be possible to use the space as efficiently as possible and reach at least 30 bike park posts. Additional useful amenities will support the bike and e-bike commuters.

Additional benefits for workers, i.e. health improvements, relaxation during a commute, money-saving due to fuel expenditure, vehicle maintenance, occasional repair, insurance, and the parking costs reduction

The entire community of staff, faculty, and students gravitating to the WRP will benefit from using the bike room. It is a diverse, inclusive, and effective project since the bike room will be safely accessible to the whole community.

The three most important milestones include the following: 1) Physical space renovation (painting, carpet removal, flooring, ceiling); 2) Electronic access door installation 3) Bike racks and amenities installation

Metrics for Success: 

The increase in users and storage of bicycles in the newly renovated room. Uptick in requests for access to the bike room and its amenities. Requests and recommendations from users for further enhancements and improvements.
