How to Join: 
All the steps are in place to complete the retrofit... ...but I graduate Spring 2012 and I will not be able to finish the project before graduation because the amount of time that it takes to coordinate purchases using the UCSC FOAPAL process will take more time than what remains in the quarter. A member of the UCSC Green Campus Program (a student led energy efficiency group on campus) is planning to take over the project for next year and will still probably need help coordinating the implementation. Please inquire!

Project Description: 

There are two parts to the YLITES project. The first part modifies and improves the existing Green Careers course at Watsonville High School by adding an energy curriculum that includes various concepts in energy such as quantifying energy, renewable energy, and behavior change. The second component of the project is an on-site lighting efficiency retrofit. Inside various buildings (metal shop, agriculture shop, GIS computer lab, and old gymnasium) the existing lighting is set up with old inefficient metal halides that use up to 1kW per hour, and we plan to retrofit around 70 of these metal halide fixtures using money that I received from the UCSC Carbon Fund. Partnering with the Pajaro Vally Unified School district and Watsonville High School made this project possible.

Metrics for Success: 

All lights replaced with energy efficient lights.

Results: 

All lights at the high school were replaced with high efficiency LED lights.
