Sustainable Supply Chain Engagement

Sustainability Problem and Proposed Solution: 

The UC system has committed to carbon neutrality with UC president Napolitano’s Carbon Neutrality Initiative. The scope three carbon emissions associated with the supply chain are not regulated with the Carbon Neutrality Initiative. Creating sustainable supply chain engagement allows UCSC to be a leader in true Carbon Neutrality, by reducing unrestricted carbon emissions and changing private company operations to create wider sustainable change.

Project Description: 

My mentor, Nancy Nieblas, is a Strategic Sourcing Associate at Procurement Services and our goal is to benchmark supplier operations. The original goal was to complete a comparison report of the available supplier benchmarking platforms. When reaching out to companies that offer supplier benchmarking platforms the opportunity for a pilot program arose. The current stage of the project is using the supplier survey platform, SupplyShift, from a local consulting firm Ecoshift. The survey for the scorecard was developed with collaboration between UCSC and UCSD procurement. UCSC Procurement Services has acquired grant funding through the Campus Sustainability Plan to finance UCSC’s presentation of this project's results to the California Higher Education Sustainability Conference.

Metrics for Success: 

The key metric for success is expanding the benchmarked supplier base, documenting these suppliers scored operations pertaining to sustainability (ie. carbon emissions, energy use, waste, transportation, environmental policy, etc.).

Last years PSI benchmarked 9 suppliers operations with 17 yes or no questions. A new scorecard consisting of 36 questions was developed and sent to 46 suppliers this year. This new scorecard was developed from a UC San Diego supply chain benchmarking pilot with SupplyShift, a cloud based tool, and also used SupplyShift to send the survey. There was a 63 percent response rate, with 29 suppliers responding.
